Our teachers, books, and people from Cambridge and Oxford have been teaching us wrongly about the definition of the Pronoun. Although they know they are teaching wrong, they are making the amendments

Yes, the correct definition as per Suniltams English Guru is mentioned below:

The Correct Definition of Pronoun – Pronouns are the words which we use to refer to nouns which are already clear.

Unless we have an antecedent to refer, we cannot use a pronoun. Then how can we say “pronoun is a word used in place of a noun”.

No, we cannot and we should not. We use pronouns to refer to nouns.

Ramesh found a circus ticket. He picked it up and gave it to his friend Surbhi. She threw it into a river.

Here, you can clearly see, we have used ‘he’ and ‘she’ for the nouns which already mentioned. If we did not mention Ram and Surbhi, how could you understand ‘he’ and ‘she’?

Below sentences are examples of sloppy use of Pronouns:

  1. They say that eating beef is bad for anyone. – Here, we are not able to understand who by the use of ‘they’.

  6. Interrogative pronouns – who, what, whose, where, whom
  7. Distribute pronouns – neither, either, each, every
  8. Relative pronouns – When Interrogative pronouns are used in the middle of the sentences to refer to the noun used just before them. That is also a relative pronoun.
