India’s cultural history is rich, diverse, and full of knowledge. However, what we believe about our traditions today is often very different from reality. Over time, many aspects of Indian history have been distorted, manipulated, or erased altogether.
🔍 Why was Indian history altered?
🔍 How did British colonizers change our perception of Indian culture?
🔍 Was ancient Indian society truly regressive, or have we been made to believe so?
Let’s embark on a journey to rediscover the truth about India’s past, the role of women, and how our traditions were systematically altered to make us feel inferior.
1. Was Ancient India Really Regressive?
Many people today believe that ancient Indian society was deeply patriarchal and oppressive towards women. But is that true?
If you look at the first-century Indian female sculptures, you’ll notice that women did not wear blouses. Even in the third and seventeenth centuries, women traditionally draped sarees without blouses.
But in the nineteenth century, this changed completely. Suddenly, covering one’s upper body became mandatory, and clothing styles transformed.
🧐 Why did this cultural shift happen?
💡 Was this truly an “Indian” tradition, or was it imposed on us?
The truth is, many modern Indian social norms were introduced by British colonizers to suit their own moral standards. But before we get into that, let’s take a closer look at how open and progressive Indian society really was.
2. How Was Sex Perceived in Ancient India?
Modern India considers sex to be a taboo topic. Discussions around sexuality are considered immoral, and many traditional values are wrongly associated with Western influence. But what if I told you that ancient Indian temples depict explicit sexual sculptures?
India is home to thousands of temples that feature carvings of various sexual acts. These temples are places of worship, where people of all ages, including children and elders, are allowed.
So, if sexuality was seen as immoral, then why would such depictions exist in holy places?
In ancient Indian society:
✔️ Sex was considered a normal and essential part of life.
✔️ It was not associated with shame or sin.
✔️ It was even documented in religious and philosophical texts.
📜 Religious texts like the Arthashastra and Kamasutra provide detailed guidelines on the role of sex workers in society, how they should be respected, and how they should maintain their businesses.
If prostitution was so openly discussed in Indian scriptures, then why is it illegal today? Clearly, Indian society was once more progressive than it is today.
3. Did Love Marriages Exist in Ancient India?
💔 In today’s India, love marriages are often condemned.
💔 Many parents oppose their children choosing their own partners.
💔 Honor killings occur even in modern metropolitan cities like Mumbai.
But if this is the case, then why does Hindu Dharma mention Gandharva Vivaha (love marriages) in its scriptures?
✔️ Hindu texts allow eight types of marriages, including Gandharva Vivaha, where partners marry for love, without parental approval.
✔️ The Mahabharata and Ramayana contain multiple stories of love marriages.
✔️ The Vedas acknowledge that a woman has the right to choose her own spouse.
So, if our ancient culture permitted love marriages, why do so many Indians consider them wrong today?
The truth is that India was not always a conservative society. This shift happened much later due to foreign invasions and British rule.
4. The Role of Women in Ancient India
Today, many people believe that ancient Indian women were:
🚫 Uneducated
🚫 Confined to household roles
🚫 Denied independence
But historical evidence tells a completely different story!
Women in Ancient Education and Administration
📖 Vedic scriptures mention at least 30 prominent female scholars (Rishikas) who contributed to Hindu philosophy.
📖 Gargi, a renowned philosopher, debated with the great sage Yajnavalkya in King Janaka’s court.
📖 The Upanishads discuss women’s contributions to knowledge and learning.
Not only were women educated, but they also held administrative and military roles.
Female Leaders in Indian History
👑 Rani Durgavati: Defended her kingdom against Mughal forces but chose honorable death over surrender.
👑 Prabhavati Gupta: A powerful ruler who governed her empire successfully.
👑 Nayak Devi: Defeated Muhammad Ghori in battle.
Clearly, women in ancient India were powerful, educated, and independent. But why was this part of history erased?
The answer lies in 12th-century invasions and British colonization.
5. How Did Foreign Invaders Destroy India’s Cultural Identity?
The 12th century marked the beginning of foreign invasions that drastically changed Indian society.
💀 Islamic invaders attacked Indian temples and libraries, burning down ancient texts.
💀 Thousands of women were kidnapped and sold as slaves.
💀 Women were forced into seclusion to protect them from sexual violence.
This is when purdah (veil) and ghunghat (head covering) traditions began. Before these invasions, Indian women did not hide their faces.
Then came the British, who added another layer of cultural distortion.
6. How the British Manipulated Indian History
In 1859, British scholar Max Müller wrote:
“We have conquered India politically, but now we must conquer them through education.”
And that’s exactly what they did.
📚 They altered Indian history books to make Indians believe they were backward.
📚 They translated Hindu scriptures incorrectly to portray Indian culture as oppressive.
📚 They systematically replaced Indian education with Western education.
🚨 What was the result? 🚨
📉 Indians started believing their own culture was regressive and uncivilized.
📉 Women, once highly respected, were pushed into social confinement.
📉 Traditional professions like textile weaving (dominated by women) were destroyed to favor British industries.
This intentional manipulation of Indian history is why even today, many people consider Indian culture inferior to Western culture.
Conclusion: Reclaiming Our History
Today, even after 75 years of independence, many Indians still see their own culture as outdated.
But history proves that India was once a progressive, open-minded, and highly developed civilization.
The goal of rewriting our history was to make us feel ashamed of our roots. But now, it’s time to reclaim the truth.
