During the meeting, President Putin expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Modi, highlighting their strong and cordial relations. He specifically noted his surprise at Modi’s firm stance in defending India’s national security interests, praising the Indian Prime Minister as a “very wise man” who has guided India towards remarkable development.

“We will be glad to see our friend, Mr. Prime Minister Modi in Russia. We will be able to discuss all current issues, talk about the outlook for the development of Russian-Indian relations. We have a very large amount of work to do,” President Putin remarked, emphasizing the breadth and depth of the agenda for their potential meeting.

President Putin requested Minister Jaishankar to convey his best wishes to Prime Minister Modi along with the official invitation. However, he acknowledged that next year might be challenging for both countries due to internal affairs, with India gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections and Russia preparing for its presidential election.

Despite these challenges, both leaders remain committed to strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Russia. The annual summit between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin is a key institutional dialogue mechanism, with the last summit taking place in December 2021 during Putin’s visit to New Delhi.

The two leaders also discussed the growing trade turnover between the two countries, with a focus on crude oil and high technology sectors. President Putin mentioned the consistent growth in trade turnover for the second consecutive year.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed confidence that the annual summit would take place next year, highlighting the frequent contact between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin throughout the year. The summit serves as a crucial platform for discussing and advancing strategic cooperation between India and Russia.

In addition to bilateral issues, Jaishankar’s visit to Russia included discussions on defense cooperation and initiatives such as the North-South International Transport Corridor and the Chennai-Vladivostok route. Both leaders also addressed various international matters, reaffirming the strength and reliability of the India-Russia relationship.

The invitation extended by President Putin signals a continued commitment to deepening ties between India and Russia, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic relations in navigating global challenges.
