Dubai, December 19, 2023: In a historic move, the Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction for 2024 ventured beyond Indian borders, finding a home in Dubai. The bidding spectacle kicked off with a bang as West Indies dynamo Rovman Powell emerged as the first player to go under the hammer.
Powell, who donned the Delhi Capitals jersey in the IPL 2023 season, was a hot commodity at the auction. Both the Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders vied for the services of the former Delhi Capitals batter. Eventually, it was the Royals who secured Powell for a hefty sum of INR 7.40 crore. Kolkata Knight Riders bowed out of the bidding war once Powell’s price tag reached the 7.40 crore mark.
Despite entering the auction with the smallest purse of INR 14.5 crore, the Rajasthan Royals were resolute in their pursuit of Powell, who brings middle-order prowess and finishing skills to the team. With 16 players already in the squad, the Royals needed to pick 8 players, including 3 overseas players.
Powell, a seasoned IPL campaigner, had previously been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022 and the Delhi Capitals in the 2023 season. His standout performance came in 2022, where he played 14 matches for KKR, amassing 250 runs. However, his stint with Delhi Capitals in 2023 was brief, featuring in just 3 matches and scoring 7 runs. The Capitals released Powell during the player retention process.
The Rajasthan Royals’ updated squad now boasts a formidable lineup with the addition of Powell, joining the likes of Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, and other talented players.
