In a bid to bolster the security of digital payments and prevent unintended fund transfers, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed payment apps to disable UPI IDs that have remained inactive for over a year. The deadline for this crucial action is set for December 31, urging users to promptly review and update their linked mobile numbers to avoid disruptions.
The move comes in response to potential complications arising when users change their mobile numbers without unlinking the previous ones from the banking system. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) guidelines allow telecom firms to reassign deactivated numbers to new users after 90 days, posing a risk of inadvertent transfers if individuals fail to update their linked mobile numbers.
Payment Service Providers (PSP) and Third-party App Providers (TPAP) are mandated to take necessary actions by the December 31 deadline to identify and deactivate inactive UPI IDs. Users of popular UPI applications such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm are advised to review their linked phone numbers, ensuring that UPI IDs remain active and unused for less than a year. It is crucial to confirm that none of the linked phone numbers have been inactive for over three months.
The deactivation process involves removing inactive UPI IDs from inward credit transactions, and the corresponding phone numbers will be removed from the UPI mapper. Customers with deactivated UPI IDs must re-register in their UPI apps to restore the link. Despite deactivation, users can continue making payments and non-financial transactions using their UPI PIN.
This measure is implemented to enhance security and prevent issues related to outdated and inactive UPI IDs, ensuring a more reliable and secure digital payment environment for users. It is advised that users stay informed and take necessary actions to comply with the NPCI’s directive.
In addition to this, the central government is gearing up to implement new SIM card regulations from January 1, 2024, bringing significant changes to the SIM card acquisition process. These regulatory changes are expected to have a substantial impact on how users acquire and use SIM cards in the country.
Please note that users are encouraged to verify the information and stay updated with official sources for any potential changes to the mentioned deadlines and guidelines.
