Meta Takes Rigorous Action Against Inappropriate Content on Facebook and Instagram in India

In a recent disclosure, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, revealed its comprehensive efforts in enforcing content moderation measures on its platforms in India. Back in November 2023, the tech giant removed over 18.3 million pieces of content from Facebook and 4.7 million from Instagram, specifically targeting Indian accounts.

The initiative was implemented across 13 policies for Facebook and 12 policies for Instagram, addressing a wide range of violations. Meta’s commitment to user satisfaction was evident as the company received 21,149 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism during November 2023.

In response to the reported issues, Meta emphasized its dedication to providing effective tools for issue resolution. Across 10,710 cases, users were given access to tools that included established reporting channels for specific violations, self-remediation flows allowing users to download their data, and mechanisms to address concerns like hacked accounts.

The monthly report, a mandatory practice aligning with the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, revealed the company’s proactive stance. Meta stated, “We measure the number of pieces of content (such as posts, photos, videos, or comments) we take action for going against our standards.” This action may involve removing content from Facebook or Instagram or covering photos or videos that may be disturbing to some audiences with a warning.

In October 2023, Meta had already demonstrated its commitment by removing over 33.6 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook and over 3.4 million pieces across 12 policies for Instagram.

The disclosure highlights the increasing efforts of major digital and social media platforms to comply with the new IT Rules 2021. Platforms with more than 5 million users, like Meta, are required to publish monthly compliance reports. The transparency provided by Meta in its monthly reports signifies a step towards fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment.
