  • 1812: British Prime Minister Spencer Perceval is assassinated by John Bellingham in the lobby of the House of Commons. Perceval remains the only British prime minister to have been assassinated while in office.
  • 1997: Deep Blue, IBM’s chess-playing computer, defeats world champion Garry Kasparov in a highly publicized match. This marked the first time a reigning world champion lost to a computer under standard chess tournament time controls.
