Lok Sabha Speaker Expresses Anguish Over Politicization of Security Breach; High-Level Committee Investigates

In a tense turn of events during the Winter session of Parliament, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed deep concern over the politicization of the December 13 security breach. The Speaker objected strongly to opposition members bringing placards into the House, asserting that such actions undermine the dignity of the parliamentary proceedings.

Birla, visibly distressed, addressed the House, saying, “It is sad that politics is being done on this issue… To enter the Well of the House and sloganeering is against the dignity of the House. I request your (opposition) cooperation to hold discussions on important issues.”

The opposition had been demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the December 13 incident when two individuals breached security, causing chaos in the Lok Sabha chamber.

Amid the uproar, Birla clarified that the suspension of some opposition members was not related to the security breach but rather to the act of bringing placards into the House. He emphasized that a high-level committee is already investigating the security breach incident.

“Security of Parliament falls under the purview of the Lok Sabha secretariat, and measures have been taken based on suggestions from the all-party meeting,” Birla informed the members during Question Hour.

Despite appeals from Birla and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, opposition MPs continued their protests, waving placards and engaging in sloganeering. As a result, the Speaker announced an adjournment of the House till 12 noon.

The opposition’s demands also included action against BJP MP Pratap Simha, who had authorized visitor passes for the individuals involved in the security breach. In response to the disruptions, 12 Lok Sabha MPs and one Rajya Sabha MP were suspended for the remainder of the session.

The Speaker concluded by expressing his commitment to consulting members on the issue and urged them to take their seats, emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum in parliamentary proceedings.

Speaker ne apne bayan mein yeh bhi spasht kiya ki vah sadasyon se is mudde par samvad jari rakhege aur unhe apni jagahon par baithne ki agrah kiya, parliamentary proceedings mein maryada banaye rakhne ki mahatvaakansha ko dikhate hue.
