In a significant diplomatic move, India has extended an invitation to French President Emmanuel Macron to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2024, according to reliable sources. The announcement comes after an earlier invitation extended to US President Joe Biden, who regretfully had to decline due to conflicting commitments.
Sources reveal that US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti had conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to President Biden for the Republic Day celebrations. However, Biden’s inability to travel to New Delhi in January is attributed to his scheduled State of the Union address, ongoing re-election campaign considerations, and the pressing focus on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The decision not to host the Quad Summit in January, as originally planned, is another notable development. Instead, India has opted to organize the Quad Summit later in 2024. The rescheduling is prompted by logistical challenges and conflicting schedules among Quad partners.
“The Quad Summit in India is proposed to be held later in 2024. We are looking for revised dates as the dates currently under consideration do not work with all the Quad partners,” stated official sources.
Earlier speculations suggested that leaders of the Quad grouping might be invited as guests for the Republic Day celebrations. However, the recent decision to defer the Quad Summit has added a new dimension to the unfolding diplomatic scenario.
As India prepares to welcome President Macron for the Republic Day festivities, this move reinforces the strong bilateral ties between India and France.
