In response to the alarming security breach on December 13, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is set to assume the responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of the new Parliament building complex. The breach, where two individuals infiltrated the Lok Sabha, spraying yellow smoke, has prompted a comprehensive review of security protocols.
The Union home ministry issued a directive for a thorough survey of the Parliament building complex to facilitate the “regular deployment of CISF security and fire wing on a comprehensive pattern,” according to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI).
The CISF, a central armed police force, currently guards various central government ministry buildings, civil airports, and the Delhi Metro. Experts from the government building security unit of the CISF, alongside fire combat and response officers, will collaborate with the existing Parliament security team to conduct the survey starting later this week.
The security lapse occurred when two individuals, identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, entered the Lok Sabha during a session, releasing yellow smoke from concealed canisters. MPs intervened swiftly, raising concerns about the apparent security loopholes that allowed unauthorized access from the visitors’ gallery.
To address these vulnerabilities, both the new and old Parliament complexes, along with their associated buildings, will be brought under a comprehensive security cover led by the CISF. This arrangement will also incorporate elements from the Parliament Security Service (PSS), the Delhi Police, and the Parliament Duty Group (PDG) of the CRPF.
The incident, which coincided with the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, exposed significant flaws in the security infrastructure. The two intruders possessed entry passes signed by BJP MP Prarap Simha, whose office stated that they receive numerous requests for such passes. One of the accused, Manoranjan D, obtained the entry pass from the BJP MP’s office after conducting a reconnaissance earlier this year, revealing that shoes were not checked before allowing entry.
The upcoming security overhaul aims to address these lapses and reinforce security measures throughout the Parliament complex, ensuring the safety of this critical government institution.
