Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has declined to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has promptly labeled the summons by the federal agency as ‘illegal.’ This comes as the ED issued a fresh summons, marking the fifth one, after Kejriwal skipped four earlier summonses in the past four months.
Despite the ED’s persistent attempts to question Kejriwal, the AAP asserts that their legal team is scrutinizing the legality of the summons. Meanwhile, Kejriwal is scheduled to participate in a protest alongside Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, targeting alleged irregularities in the recent Chandigarh mayoral polls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized Kejriwal for evading the ED summons, with leader Harish Khurana questioning why Kejriwal hasn’t sought legal recourse if he believes the summons is unlawful. Khurana has characterized Kejriwal’s actions as a strategic move to present himself as helpless.
In a recent political development, the BJP secured victory in the Chandigarh mayoral polls, dealing a setback to the AAP-Congress combine. The alliance alleged tampering with ballot papers by the presiding officer.
The money laundering case revolves around allegations that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, granting licenses to liquor traders, facilitated cartelization and favored certain dealers who purportedly paid bribes. The AAP vehemently denies these accusations. Subsequently, the excise policy was revoked, and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, leading to the ED registering a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The ongoing developments raise questions about the political and legal ramifications for Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP in the face of the ED’s pursuit in the money laundering case.
