Greece, a country that's been Orthodox Christian for a long time, now allows same-sex marriage. It's a big change in their laws.

Greece’s Opposition, which includes the leftist parties, gathered enough support to pass the bill, even though some members of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ New Democracy party either didn’t vote or voted against it. This was surprising because usually, parties don’t agree across the board. The bill doesn’t change the rules for LGBT couples who want to have children using assisted reproduction methods. Surrogate pregnancies won’t be an option for LGBT individuals either, but the law does acknowledge children who were already born abroad through surrogacy.

Some far-right parties, like Elliniki Lysi, criticized the bill, calling it “anti-Christian” and against national interests. Former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who is from the New Democracy party, also opposed it, saying that same-sex marriage isn’t a human right.

Outside the parliament, LGBT groups showed their support with banners advocating for equality. One member of the Greek Transgender Support Association expressed pride in Greece becoming more progressive. They believe that with time, people’s attitudes will change, helped by these new laws.

Activists have been fighting for these changes for years, often facing opposition from religious institutions and conservative politicians. Although same-sex couples had tried to marry before, their weddings were annulled by the courts. However, Greece has made some progress recently, allowing civil partnerships in 2015, recognizing gender identity in 2017, and banning conversion therapy for minors two years ago.
