In a historic and landmark year for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), 2023 witnessed a series of remarkable achievements, solidifying India’s position in the global space exploration arena.
Chandrayaan-3: ISRO launched its third lunar exploration mission, Chandrayaan-3, on July 14, 2023. A monumental achievement followed on August 23 when the spacecraft successfully soft-landed on the Moon’s south pole, making India the first country to achieve this feat. This success places India alongside the United States, the Soviet Union, and China as the fourth nation to achieve a soft landing on the Moon.
Chandrayaan-3’s payloads, Vikram and Pragyan, made groundbreaking discoveries, including the confirmation of the presence of sulphur on the lunar south pole. These discoveries open the door to future missions, exploring the Moon’s potential resources for water, oxygen, and fuel.
Aditya-L1: Launched on September 2, 2023, Aditya-L1 marked India’s first space-based solar observatory. Positioned in a halo orbit around Lagrange point 1, 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, Aditya-L1 is set to study the Sun, shedding light on solar phenomena and enhancing our understanding of stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
Gaganyaan TV-D1: October 21, 2023, saw the successful launch of the first uncrewed flight mission of the Gaganyaan program, known as Gaganyaan TV-D1. This mission demonstrated the performance of the Crew Escape System, a critical aspect of India’s human spaceflight program. The in-flight abort of the Crew Escape System showcased ISRO’s commitment to astronaut safety.
PSLV-C55: ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) continued its success story with the launch of TeLEOS-2 and Lumelite-4 on April 22, 2023. These satellites, weighing 741 kilograms and 16 kilograms respectively, belong to Singapore and were placed into an eastward low-inclination orbit.
ISRO-Microsoft Collaboration: On January 5, 2023, ISRO and Microsoft joined forces to support Indian space-tech startups. The collaboration aims to empower startups with technology tools, mentoring, and go-to-market support, fostering innovation in the space-tech sector.
